60 Years of Mini Celebration Run & BBQ
60 Years of Mini Celebration Run & BBQ – Sunday 25 August 2019
Here is the latest information regarding our Celebrating 60 Years of Mini Run and BBQ Lunch. Our earlier plans to begin our day at Old Parliament House (OPH) have been dashed. We were passed over in favour of a “Writers Festival” being held on the same weekend as our event. OPH are expecting around 3,000 people to attend each day, so closing off the carpark was not an option they were prepared to consider for a bunch of minis. BTW Did you know minis are featured in the diorama of OPH on display inside of the building.
We have chosen a new start location at Parkes Langton Street. Most of would know the place as the location of past “All British Days”. Nothing else has changed. The start time is 10:00am. I have included my usual table with the updates and Google Map at the bottom of this email.
While most of what is included below has been communicated before, I have included it again for completeness and to help if you forward this email on to your non ACTMCC friends.
The mini was first launched to the public on the 26th of August 1959 (see Wikipedia). Our event to celebrate 60 years of the mini will be held on Sunday, 25 August 2019 from 10:00am. This event will be our major Club event for the year. President Ann has already invited a number of other mini clubs and will be forwarding this email as a reminder and update for our event. The event is open to other mini related clubs and our ACTMCC Facebook members who have mini, moke or some other variant.
The ACTMCC will cater for the event by supplying a light lunch of sausages, steak and onions sandwiches. Bring your own drinks and a chair. For dessert we will have a 60 Year celebration cake in the form of a mini prepared by one of our members.
We will start the event by meeting at Parkes Langton Street and then drive in convoy to…
- Red Hill Lookout
- Cotter Bend via Parkes Way and Coppins Crossing
- BBQ Lunch at Cotter Bend
- Gowrie – (Peter & Sue’s place for coffee) Note: the address for Peter and Sue’s place will be provided on the day and if we have too many cars to fit in their street, we will relocate to Rolfe Classic Mini in Phillip.
Without taking into account stops ie for lunch etc, the drive time is around 2 hours and the distance is 95 Km.
We will be contacting the local media (Canberra Times, Win News and maybe the local radio stations) to give them an opportunity to take photos at Parkes Langton Street.
Lunch is at Cotter Bend. After Lunch, we will head out along Paddys River Road towards Tharwa. The Tidbinbilla Space Complex may be welcomed stop if time permits and there is enough interest, as will Tharwa. From Tharwa, we will head to Gowrie (Peter & Sue’s place) for Tea and Coffee and maybe a Pizza dinner or Rolfe Classic Mini in Phillip. The travel time for this leg is about 1 hour without stops.
The cost of the event will be covered by the ACTMCC to include….
- Steak, sausages and onions for the BBQ
- Paper plates for dinner and desert
- Additional soft drinks
- Tea and Coffee and Pizzas
- Paper Cups for Tea and Coffee
